Happy Sunday! I hope you are having a relaxing weekend. We have been out and about a lot lately. The other day we went to visit my mother, and I thought I would share a walk through her little cottage with you. Her house is one of the oldest in the state of Wisconsin.
Her house is filled with tons of amazing antiques. She's been an antique dealer for more than 35 years. These things represent a life time of collecting.
Some of these things are for her antique business. Many of these things were my relatives. Almost all my relatives were antique nuts. Myself included.
I made these burlap pillows from rice bags. You can read more on the tutorial here. They look great in Mom's house.
I love this display. It makes me think spring is just around the corner.
Mom is very partial to fine art. She considers her style country, but I think it's more cottage style. What's the difference anyway? I tried Googling it, but nothing came up.
That's my grandmother in the water color painting.
You may get a false impression from looking at these photos. You may think that she prepared for this photo shoot for hours. No, that's not true at all. Actually, I arrived rather unannounced. She had no idea I was going to come and visit, let alone take pictures of her house.
It always looks this way. Clean, beautiful, classic. There is hope for me that someday I will be able to keep my house this clean and organized. Perhaps. Perhaps not.
I don't know if I will ever be able to match her decorating magic. She is definitely a master.
But it still makes me wonder, what's the difference between cottage style and country decorating? This photo to me, looks country.
But this one looks like cottage style. Hummm, what do you think? By, the way, this horse collar hame was made by my Great, Great grandfather's company, the US Hames Company.
The Ogee clock in the background was made by my grandfather, it used to tick all night and keep me awake. I loved listening to it with the crickets chirping on a warm summer nights.
So, cottage or country?

I don't know if there is a difference between country and cottage, but for me country is Americana: cabin, darker woods, some painted, colonial, hand turned whereas cottage can be eclectic mix of French, Swedish, American, shabby chic, carved pieces, painted pieces... etcetera. That's my own idea. It would be interesting to know.

ReplyDeleteYour mom's home is so charming with many wonderful treasures. I'm no expert, but I think Country-Cottage is what she has going on -- pastels or faded fabrics, over-stuffed comfy chairs, glass & beach-iness (cottage) blended with well-loved woods, simple line furniture, vintage quilts, faded calico, and farm implements (country). Whatever style it is, it is beautiful!
