I actually decided not to paint this room. I don't like the mint green color, but I decided not to paint because of the way it would affect the living room next to it. Right now, both rooms are about the same color value (value is the lightness or darkness of color). The dining room/kitchen is pastel green, the living room is light blue. If I painted the kitchen a darker color, then the living room would have to be painted too, because the light blue just wouldn't work as well with a darker color. So I decided to leave well enough alone, at least for now because there are other more pressing projects that I would like to do, and painting the dining room/kitchen and living rooms is just too much for me to tackle right now. Total cost $0.00.
There are a few DIY projects that I did in this room. The first one (top left) was to make a message center out of an old drawer that I had just laying around. I didn't do anything at all with the wooden finish on the drawer. I liked the way it looked all beat up. I cut foam core to the same size as the inside of the drawer, covered it with this awesome printed burlap, and hung it on the wall with a picture hanger. I used T-pins to hang keys, grocery lists and post cards inside of it. I love the way it turned out. Total cost for this project, $8.99.
The second DIY project was to use some wine crates for shoe storage under the buffet. I got the crates at Sam's Club free when I purchased a case of wine. We then added small casters that we had to the bottom of the boxes so the roll out from under the buffet easily. I didn't do anything with the finish on these boxes either, I liked the light colored wood. Total cost $0.00.
The Buffet is a piece that my husband dragged home from the neighbors trash pile. I love a good neighbor, don't you? It had a broken leg which is probably why they threw it out. We fixed it with some wood clue and clamps, it's as good as new. It probably needs a little bit of oil to spruce up the finish, and I will get to that one of these days, but it isn't too seriously scratched up. Total cost $0.00.
I made cafe curtains from some black and white Toile fabric that I had in my fabric stash, so they didn't cost me anything. There was one small rod at this window when we moved in, we moved it to the center of the window and added a larger more substantial rod at the top for the valance. I did have to buy some curtain rings and the top rod, but I got them for 60% off at Joann Fabrics, I spent a total of $10.00 for both of them.
More views of the kitchen reveal a pot rack that we made from an old wire crate I bought at the local antique mall for $18.00. We hung the crate upside down from the ceiling and added some S hooks to hang pots and utensils.
We did buy black metal shelf brackets for the wall shelves which we already owned. The brackets cost us a total of about $45.00. I filled the shelves with some of my favorite red pieces, along with a couple empty blue wine bottles for extra color (It helps the room tie together with the blue living room walls). The metal storage crates hold onions and potatoes, they are originally from Pottery Barn, although they are several years old.
Here's how the numbers total up:
- Paint $0.00
- Message Center 9.00
- Shoe Storage Crates 0.00
- Buffet 0.00
- Curtain Rod/Rings 0.00
- Pot Rack 18.00
- Shelf Brackets 45.00
Total Cost: $82.00
That's it! Next room to redo is the Living Room, tune in next week!
