I love mittens, there are tons of them on Pintrest. Wool mittens are my favorite, they are so warm and cozy when it is snowing outside. They are rather pricey though.
Time to be creative: felt, cut and sew.
Start with an old wool sweater from the thrift store. Wash in hot water, and dry it on the highest dryer setting. You may want to repeat this process more than once.
I used the sleeves to make my mittens, but you can just as easily use the hem of the sweater where the ribbed knit is. It's not a very scientific process, be creative. You can do it!

You can get fancy and make a paper pattern if you like. Or you can use a Sharpie to draw a mitten around your hand (don't forget the 1/2" seam allowance) like I did. I used the fold of the sleeve for one side of the mitten, so I just have a seam on the thumb side.
Cut out the mitten and begin sewing. If you have a Serger, I recommend using it. My Serger got lost in one of our moves somewhere, so I single needled the seam, and then finished the edges with a zigzag stitch. This sweater was very heavy, depending on your sweater's weight, it may be a good idea to change the setting on your feed dog so you can slip the fabric under the presser foot with ease.
There you have it. Instant mittens. You could block and press them into shape if you like, but they really don't need it. I made an extra pair to give away they were so much fun!
