31 Days of Cleansing: Day 26 The Monte Cristo Sandwich

I am working on getting caught up on things around here. We had a busy weekend with company and an impromptu road trip. Hard to get things done if you don't stay home! I have been pretty good with my eating habits all month, so it's time for a little something special.

We fell in love with the Monte Cristo Sandwich when we lived in Chicago. It was a popular item at one of our favorite restraunts, and at the time I didn't even know who the Count of Monte Cristo was. If that name doesn't mean anything to you either, click here to read my post on this famous work of literature. The sandwich is high in protein, and although it contains whole wheat bread, you could easily substitute a glutten free variety.

You will need bread or bread substitute, eggs, milk, sharp white cheddar cheese, ham, turkey and a bit of butter.

Put the eggs in a bowl, I used 1 egg per two people.

Add 1/4 cup milk per egg, I used 3/4 cup total. Whisk them together.

Soak the bread slices briefly in the egg mixture until well coated.

Meanwhile, melt a bit of butter in a large frying pan over medium heat.

Fry the bread on both sides until it begins to brown. Is this picture blurry? I must have been blind when I took it.

Add slices of ham and turkey to the bread. Add a slice of sharp white cheddar to the other side. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the cheese starts to melt, and the ham and turkey are warmed. Put the two halves together and cook for a minute or two more, turning once. Some versions of this recipe call for making the sandwiches first and then dipping them into the egg mixture as a whole. I found this method very messy and difficult to cook. You decide.

Serve it up with some pineapple salsa, chips and a pickle. Delicious!
