The Imperfect Vintage Dresser

Are you a perfectionist? Do you find yourself attracted to things that are perfect? I find that I love the imperfect. The more things are battered and used, the more attracted to them I am. Why is that?

Maybe it's because we, as humans are battered and imperfect too. I love all things vintage, and this dresser is a great example of how perfect imperfect can be.

I just happened to find it at one of my favorite thrift stores. The paint was a bit chipped, and it was missing a few knobs, and one of it's castors. It looked rather pathetic sitting there all crooked and unloved compared to the other pieces in the shop.

The thing was, it had good bones. The white paint was in overall good condition. All the drawers worked, they were even dove tailed. All the hardware was intact, the only flaws were the missing knobs, missing castor, and a couple of dings in the front veneer.

It was a bargain at $25.00. However, when I checked out to purchase it, they marked it down to $15.50 because it was "damaged". Wow!

My kids and I jammed it in the car and drove it home.

When we got it home, we made quite a discovery.

We discovered that the missing knobs and castor pieces were in one of the drawers.

What was observed to be imperfect was really perfect after all. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

Hummmm.....

And with the help of a stencil from Hobby Lobby, and a bit of home made chalk paint...

the imperfect came to life.

Perfect!

Chalk paint is all the rage today. You can buy it or make your own version by adding a bit of plaster of paris to your regular paint. I made mine rather thick to use with the stencil, it works great to prevent the stencil from bleeding. Just stir the plaster of paris into the paint mix and use immediately. Lightly sand before finishing with a paste wax for a smooth luster.

How perfect is that?
