A Handful of Gourds

It's late and I can't sleep. I don't really know why. Perhaps it's because we were very excited to harvest our first gourds today.

We planted lots of them, just because we had the room to grow them this year and we haven't in the past. These little white ones grew in our compost pile. I honestly can't say I remember planting them. Sigh. Maybe I did and maybe I didn't,  but they are fun to decorate with at any rate.

We also planted some orange gourds and a few striped ones. The rest are almost ready, but I did manage to pick a few to try them out with my fall display. I hope they don't rot before Thanksgiving, being indoors so soon. I love that they are organically home grown, even if they do rot.

I am still working on the rest of my display. Do you ever feel like you are trying to keep up with the neighbors? I mean all over blog land bloggers are putting out the most BEAUTIFUL displays. They are everywhere. They are huge and beautiful and where did they ever get THAT idea?

 Seriously, WOW.

Years ago, we lived across the street from one such neighbor. Each fall they would bring out this GIANT cornucopia and fill it with HUNDREDS of gourds and pumpkins. I always felt out done somehow, with my two little mums and a handful of gourds on our front porch.

A handful of gourds, well it's a start.

More fall decor to come!
