Gifts Wrapped in Glass: Day 9

I am having so much fun creating these Gift Jars. There is just no limit to what you can do with them. Today's jar is very simple. I was exited to find these beautiful pint sized blue Mason Jars at Target for this project.

THE SEWING JAR

I store many of my sewing supplies in Mason Jars. I have jars for thread, buttons, trims, scissors, etc. I love this gift idea for the non-sewer or even the experienced sewer. It's nice to have everything you need for sewing repairs all in one place.

I don't know if you have noticed, but sewing is one of the things that I love to do. I think everyone should learn how to do some sewing, although I must admit my teenage boys aren't all that interested in it.

Our college age son, who is in the military, now very interested in how to maintain his wardrobe. He's only called with 10,000 questions so far this school year.

Only 10,000.

I am making a Sewing Jar for him for his birthday. It will contain small spools of thread, a pair of scissors, iron on patches, hand sewing needles, a measuring tape, a thimble and a sewing magnet.

What's a sewing magnet, you ask? It is a tool used in garment industry. The magnet sticks on to your machine where the edge of your seam allowance goes while sewing. That way you can stitch fast and furious with out having to worry about whether your stitches are straight or not. If you fabric is lined up with the magnet, you know it will be straight.

The magnet is also great for picking up lost pins and needles on the floor. Simply attach it to a piece of ribbon and wave it around on the floor. You will be amazed what you will pick up. It's a very handy tool in the sewing room.

The other things that will be in the are a tiny strawberry pin cushion, and some customized garment labels. This is kind of a joke, these are my "designer" labels. I got them as a gift a long time ago, I enjoy adding them to the gifts that I sew for people so they know it's a hand sewn item.

I choose to label the jar with another chalk painted tag, tied on with heavy quilting thread. Then I cut a piece of burlap to size and fitted it over the lid with some cotton batting underneath. It makes a great pin cushion.

There you have it. The Sewing Jar is complete!
