Ever since I met my husband many years ago, I was fascinated by the Black Cow beverage his parents served at their restaurant. I had never heard of a Black Cow. Perhaps it's just a Wisconsin thing, but they are very popular around here.
Today my youngest son brought home an ancient, old ice cream maker he bought at a thrift store for $5.00. He was thrilled, such a smart boy that one. The ice cream maker came with directions, and recipes. Of course we had to try it out......
It called for 15 lbs. crushed ice, and 3 cups of salt. We made a quick trip to the gas station to full-fill these requirements. The recipe included was:
No Milk, No Egg-lactose Free, Homemade Ice Cream
3 ripe bananas (I used frozen)
2 cups almond milk
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
pinch of salt
1/3 cup peanut butter ( I used Nutella instead)
Can you believe it? Who knew Lactose even existed 20 years ago?
The ingredients got put in a blender and combined. The ice is layered with the salt to fill the outside cavity of the machine until it is 2/3 full. Then add one cup cold water. The ingredient mixture is then poured into the center of the machine where the paddle is.
Then you close it up, and plug it in. It's that simple. Frankly, it's a miracle it works.
But it worked great. Twenty minutes later we had homemade ice cream. Wow!
So to make the Black Cow, fill a tall glass with ice cream, and add your favorite root beer (ours is Mug).
It's the perfect end to a long day. Enjoy!

P.S. I know this is a bit similar to my other blog post for Nutella Ice Cream, and I am a bit heavy on the bananas lately, but what can I say? We love bananas and it's summer time, and ice cream tastes really good when it's 90 degrees outside. If you have tried both recipes, which do you like better?
