Our first exposure to home schooling was with Carole Joy Seid. She is a veteran home schooler, one who happens to possess a master's degree in education, and has a wealth of teaching experience. Carole now travels the country giving home school seminars and has been an inspiration to thousands of families. She will be an inspiration to you too.
Carole believes in a classical approach to home schooling, with history being the core curriculum. In a nut shell, she recommends reading through the bible and studying history together, with the addition of other basic subjects like math and science. For example, we begin reading scripture until we come to Egypt and the story of Joseph, then we stop and study Egypt. Continuing on until we get to Greece, we stop and study Greek history, then on to Rome, etc. The cycle is then repeated 3-4 times until the children master the subject. This has been the cornerstone of our home schooling for many years, thanks to Carole's advice.
When you attend one of Carole's seminars, she includes a list of great books that your kids will love. We have been through her lists more than 3 times, and are still going. The children never seem to tire of these selections. Some of our classic favorites have been Heidi (we read for 8 hours straight through a blizzard one winter day because we HAD to know how it ended), and The Little House Series (which was our best home school year EVER). Carole reserves disclosing the titles on her list to those who have attended one of her seminars or purchased the pod cast from her website, www.caroljoyseid.com. You can also purchase many of her recommended books at her seminars. But, be sure to get there early because they sell out FAST!
Our home school group hosted a seminar in our area for Carole, it was a great experience. She has several different seminars that she does on home schooling kids at different ages. I have been to all of them, and highly recommend every one. Whether you are just starting out or have been home schooling for years, it's a day well spent. Don't forget to bring your husband, he will be encouraged as well. It's great for both parents to understand where the future of your home school is going. Carole is easy to work with and you will really enjoy her passion for home schooling. We had nearly 200 people in attendance at our seminar, a big number of home schoolers for a relatively small city. To find a seminar near you check Carol's website.
Carole also offers individual consulting for home schooling families. It's great to know you can find someone to ask questions when you have no where else to turn. I would first recommend attending one of her seminars, and then consider the personal counselling with Carole. Carole's home schooling approach will lighten your load, and make your home schooling more enjoyable. You may find after the seminar, that your issues resolve themselves and that you won't really need the consulting.

Designer Mom
I attended Carol's seminar here in GB when I'd first joined GBACH and my girls were preschoolers. I don't do everything "her way" now (i.e., I'm more a mix of Charlotte Mason with some classical), it was an inspiration to hear her so early in my homeschooling journey.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of her...is that terrible?
ReplyDeleteWe've bee reading (and studying) through the Old Testament and are just about to take a break at Joseph to study Egypt. We are going slow and steady, which is fine for me this year, but do you have any recommendations as far as getting through history in a timely manner while still being able to dig in a learn about it all? I feel like going through all of ancient history in a year is just so fast! But maybe that is why you revisit it as it cycles back a few times...
Thanks for sharing this with us at Trivium Tuesdays!
