Gifts Wrapped in Glass: Day 21

It has been raining here for days. Rain is rather typical weather for us this time of year. It is hard to come up with things we can do inside to keep busy. We know we have along winter ahead of us, yet it seems too soon to be cooped up.

One of our family favorite rainy day projects is to make soap.

This is Honey Almond Soap in a Jar.

Making your own soap is really quite easy. I bought a 32 oz. bag of glycerin cubes, and some Honey Almond fragrance from Hobby Lobby. I had some leftover bees wax from another project, and I even had some honey on hand.

I melted 1 lb. of the glycerin cubes over medium heat. I added 2 oz. of the bees wax, and 1 tablespoon of honey while it was melting and mixed it all together, stirring constantly

I also added two drops of yellow food color, and one drop of red.

When the mixture was melted, I removed it from the heat and added a few drops of the Honey Almond fragrance.

I added a drop or two of olive oil to the molds to be sure the soap came out easily. Then I poured the mix into the soap molds. After they had set slightly, I put the molds in the freezer for about 15 minutes to harden completely. I am impatient, have I mentioned that?

Tip: be careful how much extra stuff you add to the soap, it can affect your final result and may not harden completely.

Meanwhile I punched holes in the top of my jar lids with a screw and threaded the bolt from a glass knob into each one.

I like the clear glass knob with the simple silver lid for this project.

The finishing touch was a "designer" label. I made two jars of soap with this project, but I found that the wider jar worked better. The regular Mason wide mouth jar was a bit too small to comfortably fit your hand in to retrieve the soap. It would work fine for kids, however.

I found this jar at a rummage sale, but I have also seen them at craft stores and Walmart.

One more gift, ready for giving!

More Gifts in Glass to come!
