DIY Stag Head

Hello! Hope you are all ready for the big Turkey Day tomorrow!

Here in Wisconsin, it's deer hunting season. There are deer carcasses on cars and trucks everywhere. Deer are running amuck through the fields, across roads and into yards in town. The world stops this week, people are on vacation or hunting up north. The women traditionally shop and have girl time while the men hunt. 

Our family isn't much for hunting, but I love the look of the faux stag heads I have seen on so many blogs and in stores.

Just one problem.

They are out of my budget. I saw a pair of antlers at a garage sale last summer, I should have bought them. But they were among a bunch of skins, knives and other deer body parts that were for sale. Seriously.

It was creepy. Who sells deer parts at a rummage sale???

Needless to say, I did not purchase anything. 

In fact, I left as soon as I could.

That's why I remain without antlers. Until I made my own Stag Head that is.

I had found this paper mache' deer at a thrift store a while ago. I wasn't exactly sure what to do with it when I bought it, then I realized:

deer + antlers = stag head

Yup, you guessed it. I beheaded that poor little deer.

Just whacked the head off with a knife.

It was very gratifying.

Then I gave it two coats of white craft paint. By the way, I use these black plastic trays that come on the bottom of cakes and other baked goods to paint on. They work great for a painting pallette.

Then I hung the Stag Head on the wall with a nail. It hangs in our boys bedroom. Guys and deer, they just seem to go together, you know?

I love how it looks with this fun wreath from Target.
